Did Steve Daines Misreport Over $200, 000 in Campaign Contributions? The FEC Wants to Know

The Federal Election Commission sent a March 31 letter to Senator Steve Daines’s campaign requesting more information, citing $216,769 in transfers to his campaign committee. From the letter, flagged by American Bridge:

“This notice requests information essential to full public disclosure of your federal election campaign finances. Failure to adequately respond by the response date noted above could result in an audit or enforcement action.”

Specifically, the letter cites a discrepancy between a reported transfer from the Senate Conservative Fund, even though Daines does not list the group as a joint fundraiser.

The Senate Conservative Fund, it is worth noting, is one of those D.C. political creatures that exists primarily to line the pockets of its creators and one that has made a great deal of money bashing Republicans.

From US News and World Report in 2013:

In fact, the Senate Conservatives Fund and Heritage Action, the political arm of the once well-respected Heritage Foundation, have spent more money so far on attack ads this year against House and Senate Republicans than the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee, combined. All the while, virtually every Senate Democrat up for re-election in 2014 – all of whom were the deciding vote on Obamacare – has been given a free pass by these groups.

You see, money begets TV ads which begets even more money for these groups’ personal coffers. Pointing fingers and attacking Republicans is apparently a very profitable fundraising business. It’s also a detriment to the future of the Republican party and the critical effort to defend the House and win back the Senate in 2014.

Daines does have time to respond to the FEC to explain the oversight, but the letter notes “Failure to adequately respond by the response date noted above could result in an audit or enforcement action.”

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
