Feckless, Partisan Steve Daines Silent While Republicans Stall Coronavirus Relief Bill

I’m not going to tell you that Senator Steve Daines is a feckless, partisan, weak-willed, exploitative hack who is more interested in scoring cheap political points than in being a statesman.

His own words—and his silence—are.

Less than a week ago, Daines sanctimoniously told us that now was not the time for politics.

Following that, Daines spent the next few days playing political games, casting dishonest aspersions about the motives and character of Democratic Senators who opposed a coronavirus relief bill because it gave President Trump a massive, $500 billion slush fund he could have used without oversight and because it didn’t provide adequate protection for workers.

A sampling of his tweets makes clear that Daines, rather than negotiating in good faith, was “politicizing” the bill.

On and on, Daines called out Democrats, suggesting that the Senate needed to “act NOW” to protect Montanans, their jobs, and their health.

While Daines was tweeting, the adults in Washington continued negotiations and a better bill, one that put guard rails on the funds for businesses and prevented President Trump from profiting personally, emerged late last night and this morning.

The deal struck by real Senators, Daines took to Twitter again to argue for its immediate passage:

While it seemed like the Senate finally struck a bill that both parties could support, it’s now being held up in the Senate by four Republicans who are concerned that it is too generous to workers.

And Steve Daines, who has been tweeting endlessly about the need for immediate action, criticizing Democrats to score cheap political points, and speaking angrily to an empty Senate chamber to show just how serious he is?

Silent. Noiseless. Mute.

And that’s Steve Daines. Always willing to piously lecture others about political motives, always willing to lend his full-throated support to measures enriching billionaires and corporations, but never willing to criticize his own party or stand for the workers who make this country run.

He’s a shameful shell of a Senator, and both his speeches and subsequent silence make it clear we can no longer afford to have someone like him misrepresenting us in Washington.

Montana and the nation deserve better.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.

  • You need to go to work for MSDNC and even drive their ratings lower, if possible. Rachel Madcow and Mrs Joe would be impressed with this garbage. Everyone knows how the dems did an excellent job of being stupid again. You lost in 2016, the Mueller Report, impeachment, and just got a butt chewing from Mr. Daines, so get over it.

  • I’m not sure you and I were watching the same groups negotiate the Coronavirus Bill. My opinion of the negotiations was to watch the Democrats fight for Abortion and the Kennedy Center, not to fight for small American businesses. By the way, where are the Democrats? They certainly aren’t in Washington trying to help in any way possible.
I can guarantee that you will never get a dime from this Republican. I enjoy a good political article, but I truly hate the Democratic slant and spin. My donation will go to Steve Daines.

    • You’re certainly entitled to your opinion. Disappointing that you’d support someone who lies as regularly as Daines does but to each her own.

      Thanks for the feedback!
