If we’ve learned anything about Greg Gianforte it that he will do or say anything to buy the governor’s office. On Tuesday, his campaign sent out an e-mail from the radical anti-choice organization the Susan B. Anthony List, touting their endorsement in his race for governor:
“Congressman Greg Gianforte has been a steadfast advocate for the unborn and for the pro-life citizens of Montana throughout his time in office,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Greg will bring welcome change to the governor’s mansion after six long years of extremism from Steve Bullock, who stood in the way of compassionate legislation to stop late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy and protect babies born alive during failed abortions – popular bills that Greg championed in Congress, along with his efforts to protect conscience rights and stop taxpayer funding of the abortion industry.
It’s not surprising that Gianforte would exploit the misrepresentations the Susan B. Anthony List is peddling to fundraise. The claim that Gianforte has voted to “protect babies born alive during failed abortions” rests on the cruel, partisan effort by Republicans to politicize the horrific decision people face when after carrying a fetus to near full-term they are forced to terminate the pregnancy:
But reproductive rights and physicians’ groups said the bill could criminalize doctors and was unnecessary since laws already exist to protect an infant in the extremely unlikely scenario of a birth after an abortion attempt. “The bill maligns and vilifies providers and patients to push a false narrative about abortion later in pregnancy,” Dr. Kristyn Brandi, a board member of Physicians for Reproductive Health, told Vox in an email.
That is what is so tiresome about Gianforte’s Christian act. Rather than expressing sympathy for people likely facing some of the most difficult decisions in their lives, Gianforte is scoring political points off their grief, demonizing doctors who provide critical services and expectant mothers.
What’s more, Gianforte has no intention of allowing the legal right for reproductive freedom to continue in Montana if he’s elected. He’d almost certainly sign every piece of legislation from a reactionary legislature, whether that would mean mandating invasive ultrasounds, requiring rape survivors to notify the parent who impregnated them, and eventually outlawing all abortions in Montana.
Greg Gianforte cannot become Montana’s next governor. It’s not just that he’s an unstable, violent menace or even that he believes humans walked the Earth with dinosaurs. The reason he can’t be elected governor is that he’s not only eager to strip people of their hard-earned reproductive rights, but he’s so repulsive that he’d exploit the grief of those who have suffered unimaginable heartbreak to score some cheap political points.
