The Club for Growth PAC seems absolutely determined to buy Matt Rosendale a seat, any seat, in the U.S. Congress, as they announced they have already raised $250,000 to get Rosendale’s effort to finally get elected to the US Congress.
You have to wonder what the Club for Growth sees in Rosendale. They had to spend $2 million on sleazy ads to get him through a primary against a very weak Russ Fagg back in 2018 before he was soundly defeated by Jon Tester in November.
A 2011 article from the Nation perhaps best describes why the Club for Growth is willing to spend so heavily on Rosendale despite his demonstrated weakness as a candidate. John Nichols describes the Club for Growth’s agenda, calling them:
“an organization funded by extremely wealthy conservatives to carry out their budget-stripping goals,” and that “has been a key player in Republican Governor Scott Walker‘s move to take out the state’s organized workers.” Nichols writes that the Club for Growth is part of a “national strategy” to get “newly elected Republican governors” to destroy labor and unions.
So what does that budget-stripping the Club for Growth endorses look like?
- privatizing Social Security
- ending the protections for people with pre-existing conditions the Affordable Care Act provides.
- giving massive tax cuts for the extremely rich.
- supporting government shutdowns that hurt seniors, our economy, and the government’s credit rating.
- gutting Medicare through an ill-conceived scheme to balance the budget in a decade.
- smashing public sector unions and cutting the pay of those who work in them.
All of that, of course, is why the Club for Growth is backing such a flawed, dishonest, and failed candidate: they’re reasonably sure that, if elected, Rosendale will advance their agenda of gutting vital government services and diverting an increasing share of our nation’s resources to the elites who fund them and their extremist vision.
Rosendale has received as much support from the Club for Growth PAC as any candidate in the country over the past few years. They know he’d be a reliable vote for policies that would be devastating for Montanans of all walks of life, from seniors who rely on Medicare to employees who want decent wages and working conditions.
The right-wing machine has more than enough representatives in Washington, committed forces dedicated to taking away health care for millions and lining the pockets of their corporate masters; Montana needs to select a Representative who will look out for us.
Matt Rosendale (R-Club for Growth) just isn’t that candidate.
