A Tale of Two Senators: Daines Insults Montanans Call for Action on Green New Deal/Climate Change, Tester Wants to Work for Solutions to Climate Crisis

It is very concerning that Montana’s junior Senator Steve Daines does not seem like he understands climate change, the Green New Deal nor is he concerned with the imminent climate doom facing the world in just 12(strike that), 11 years according to the latest reports put together by leading scientists from a 2018 report.

“The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.”

It’s not only sad, but dangerous that science is so easily dismissed when it doesn’t fit with an agenda or a campaign donors agenda.

Senators opposing Green New Deal Are Drowning in Fossil Fuel Cash

Maybe this is why Sen. Daines irrationally opposes action on the climate crisis. Daines re-election campaign coffers will be filled by the fossil fuel industry so why would he listen to Montanans all over the state who demand action. Any action.

Citizens all over Montana today in Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula are asking Montana’s Senators to support the Green New Deal and Senator Tester is listening, Senator Daines is not.

Senator Tester weighs in with this thoughtful statement today on the Green New Deal:

As a farmer, I have seen the consequences of climate change firsthand.  It is more important than ever that Congress act to protect our clean water, clear skies, and healthy environment for future generations.  I strongly believe that we can tackle climate change while creating jobs and I hope this debate serves as a launching point for bipartisan solutions that reverse the dangerous trends that are putting our Montana way of life at risk.”

The Sunrise Movement is a volunteer driven organization that is holding these events in Billings, Bozeman and Missoula today to ask Montana’s Senators to support the Green New Deal.

Sen. Daines dismissed these Montanans in favor of his fossil fuel donors.

The aspirational goals that the Green New Deal resolution forwards are not a joke, nor are they to be dismissed by Sen. Daines. It needs bold plans, it needs big ideas and it needs action.

CNN reported:

“Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)…characterized the plan in an interview with CNN last week as a “dream,” suggesting he’d vote against it.”

Nancy Pelosi also called the Green New Deal:

“The green dream.”

It’s an odd situation to be in for Senator Daines to be sitting with Joe Manchin and Nancy Pelosi opposing the Green New Deal as 102 co-sponsors in the House and Senate are currently listed on the Green New Deal.

The Green New Deal is supported by many national groups, like Indivisible, unions, the League of Conservation Voters, March for Science, Sunrise Movement, and many more!

The Green New Deal:

In 2018, young people put the Green New Deal on the national agenda by sitting in at soon-to-be-speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. Shortly after, 45 House Representatives backed Ocasio-Cortez’s call for a Select Committee on a Green New Deal. And now, over 300 local and state politicians have called for a Federal Green New Deal.

In 2019, we’ll build support for the Green New Deal in every corner of the country and cement it as a litmus test for every politician seeking the Presidency.

Then, in 2020, we will unite by the millions to defeat the fossil fuel billionaires and we’ll elect a President and Congress who will make the Green New Deal law in 2021.

Currently, the Green New Deal has 102 sponsors in the house and senate. Senators and congressional leaders from Texas, Tennessee, Minnesota, Florida, North Carolina and all over the country.

  • I just read “Down to Earth: Politics in the New Climate Regime,” by Bruno Latour, a French philosopher. According to Latour, when Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Accord it was an act of war similar to Hitler invading Poland. The concept Hitler invoked to justify the invasion was Lebensraum, or living space. According to Hitler, the Aryan race needed living space to thrive, and so it had every right, being the superior race, to take what it needed from an inferior race. In the same way, Trump is invading the living space of all other nations on earth by refusing to limit our carbon emissions. As Trump apparently sees it, their space is ours to use as we will to maintain our fossil fuel powered economy. His policy is “America First,” and that gives us a right to sacrifice their well being for ours. This is otherwise known as an act of war.

Daines is fully aligned with Trump on this, and as far as I’m concerned, that makes him a war criminal. Given the overwhelming consensus among climate scientists that climate change is happening, is human caused, and will become catastrophic if we continue as we have, refusing to reduce the harm we are causing other nations, thereby causing the death of millions, maybe eventually billions, is the full moral equivalent of war, as well as a crime against humanity. It is time to start collecting the evidence, preparing the indictment, because, yeah, I want to put Trump and Daines on trial for this. Future generations will never forgive us for what we fail to do now.

    • Thanks, David! I really do wonder what is going through Daines’ head. He might be lying to the public, or he might be lying to himself. I don’t know which it is, but he is responsible for the nightmare that is coming.
