It is very concerning that Montana’s junior Senator Steve Daines does not seem like he understands climate change, the Green New Deal nor is he concerned with the imminent climate doom facing the world in just 12(strike that), 11 years according to the latest reports put together by leading scientists from a 2018 report.
“The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.”
It’s not only sad, but dangerous that science is so easily dismissed when it doesn’t fit with an agenda or a campaign donors agenda.
Maybe this is why Sen. Daines irrationally opposes action on the climate crisis. Daines re-election campaign coffers will be filled by the fossil fuel industry so why would he listen to Montanans all over the state who demand action. Any action.
Senator Tester weighs in with this thoughtful statement today on the Green New Deal:
“As a farmer, I have seen the consequences of climate change firsthand. It is more important than ever that Congress act to protect our clean water, clear skies, and healthy environment for future generations. I strongly believe that we can tackle climate change while creating jobs and I hope this debate serves as a launching point for bipartisan solutions that reverse the dangerous trends that are putting our Montana way of life at risk.”
The Sunrise Movement is a volunteer driven organization that is holding these events in Billings, Bozeman and Missoula today to ask Montana’s Senators to support the Green New Deal.
Sen. Daines dismissed these Montanans in favor of his fossil fuel donors.
The aspirational goals that the Green New Deal resolution forwards are not a joke, nor are they to be dismissed by Sen. Daines. It needs bold plans, it needs big ideas and it needs action.
“Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)…characterized the plan in an interview with CNN last week as a “dream,” suggesting he’d vote against it.”
Nancy Pelosi also called the Green New Deal:
“The green dream.”
It’s an odd situation to be in for Senator Daines to be sitting with Joe Manchin and Nancy Pelosi opposing the Green New Deal as 102 co-sponsors in the House and Senate are currently listed on the Green New Deal.
The Green New Deal is supported by many national groups, like Indivisible, unions, the League of Conservation Voters, March for Science, Sunrise Movement, 350.org and many more!
The Green New Deal:
In 2018, young people put the Green New Deal on the national agenda by sitting in at soon-to-be-speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. Shortly after, 45 House Representatives backed Ocasio-Cortez’s call for a Select Committee on a Green New Deal. And now, over 300 local and state politicians have called for a Federal Green New Deal.
In 2019, we’ll build support for the Green New Deal in every corner of the country and cement it as a litmus test for every politician seeking the Presidency.
Then, in 2020, we will unite by the millions to defeat the fossil fuel billionaires and we’ll elect a President and Congress who will make the Green New Deal law in 2021.
Currently, the Green New Deal has 102 sponsors in the house and senate. Senators and congressional leaders from Texas, Tennessee, Minnesota, Florida, North Carolina and all over the country.
