Republican talking points

“Dear Patriotic Freedom Loving American,” or some variation, is how they start out.

I get these email blasts four or five times a day. Here are the Republican antagonists:

“Nancy Pelosi” – she’s #1, followed by “Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.” A recent addition is “Maxine Waters,“ and brand new to the list, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”

They’re going to “launch a new liberal agenda so radical it could do irreversible damage to our economy, security and freedoms.”

I’m always amused that Pelosi is the dog whistle for the right. She’s a pretty moderate representative. But then again, she is a woman, and from Satan’s hometown of San Francisco.

Generic enemies are “Hollywood elites, Washington insiders, special interests (meaning environmentalists, labor, human rights activists, etc.), fake news and immigrants.”

But since there are still Republican primaries in play, the candidates I hear from save the most vitriolic attacks for members of their own party:

“Weak-kneed Republican leaders; sell-out RINOs; so-called Republicans; lying, fake conservatives; and liberal establishment Republicans” (where have those guys and gals been hiding?).

And the pundits are saying Democrats are divided.

The email I receive is awash with Trump endorsements and support from such Fox News luminaries as Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham. Slogans like “Make America Great Again” and the most ludicrous of all, “drain the swamp,” highlight the messages.

I should note that the reason I’m the beneficiary of all this far-right email is because of Rep. Greg Gianforte. Back when he was running in the special election, I subscribed to his campaign updates so I could track his activities. He obviously handed my information to other like-minded candidates: Sen. Ted Cruz, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Rep. Devin Nunes, Rep. Steve Scalise, to name but a few.

The data on me also ended up at, or been sold to, other right-wing organizations, colleges and think tanks (Women for Trump, Hillsdale College, PragerU) and various merchandizing outlets (MAGA hats, coffee mugs, medallions and t-shirts).

The email blasts are based on fear. As “Radical leftists” like “Two-faced Tester” – terms coined by Montana Republican Party Chairwoman Debra Lamm – we favor creeping socialism, more taxes, and immigrant criminals over jingoism.

You see, the rest of us don’t really like freedom. We’re not patriots. The American flag doesn’t fly in the back of our pick ups.

We wouldn’t mind regaining the respect of the rest of the world. We want to go back to Obama-era regulations governing the environment, safety and health care. (By the way, Obama is one of those red flag words like Hillary and Pelosi.) We don’t want to police the world. We do want a path to citizenship for immigrants. We support a free press. We prefer diplomacy over belligerence. And most of all, we’d appreciate a return to civility.

What a concept.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
