U.S. Department of Justice Indicts 13 for Seeking to Sway U.S. Elections

By Jared Pettinato

Today, Jared Pettinato, candidate for U.S. Congress in Montana, issued the following statement:

On Friday, United States Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted thirteen Russian nationals for trying to sway American elections.

The indictment (the legal paper that explains the criminal charges) contends the Russian nationals conspired to “sow discord in the U.S.” and sought “to defraud the United States.” Specifically, the indictment charges that they “created and controlled numerous Twitter accounts designed to appear as if U.S. persons or groups controlled them.”

Muller believes those thirteen defendants and their co-conspirators designed and managed YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts “to ensure they appeared authentic—as if operated by U.S. persons.” They organized rallies in Florida, New York, and Charlotte over the internet and hid their identities to do that.

The Russian nationals also stole “social security numbers and dates of birth of real U.S. persons,” so they could set up fake accounts and pay for advertisements. Muller has evidence the Russian conspirators spent over $1.25 million per month on their plot. You can read the whole indictment here.

Will you let the Russian conspirators get away with this? I intend to fight.

Congress passed severe sanctions on Russia in retaliation for seeking to sway the United States’ elections, but the State Department is not implementing them. Congress has options to push for the sanctions. It can summon the Secretary of State and other officials to explain why they are not following Congress’s plain direction. If Congress does not like the answers, it can restrict travel or take other measures to bring the State Department in line.

Will you join me in pushing to implement the sanctions against Russia? Would you please pitch in $5, $10, $25, or whatever you can? Your contribution will move forward my campaign for Montana’s U.S. House of Representatives seat.

I would appreciate your help. If we all join together, we can turn the United States in a new direction.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
