In a statement posted to his personal Facebook page Bozeman legislator Tom Woods has dropped out of the Democratic primary for Congress in 2018. New names have been floated as candidates as well, several people have mentioned that they wish that Helena legislator Jenny Eck would run and I have even heard Jesse Laslovich’s name mentioned as a possible candidate as well. Also, Zeno Baucus is the perpetual possible candidate with the backing of his father, the former Senator, Max Baucus.
Tom Woods Statement on his withdrawal from the race states that “John Heenan has very similar progressive issue positions to me on healthcare reform, human rights, raising the minimum wage and fighting corporate money in politics.”
The news from me is that I am withdrawing from the congressional race in Montana. The fact is, a couple of the other candidates have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, well over 10 times of what I have been able to raise. The deeply unfortunate part about a congressional campaign is that it costs about $10,000 a month at the start of a campaign. Once you begin to purchase media time (from January forward) the cost goes up. You have to add more staff. You have to purchase media time. The fact is, If I were to continue any longer, I would have to go into debt. I can’t do that.
The Statement continues:
I’m sorry if my withdrawal disappoints you as much as it disappoints me. Please take heart in the fact that there are still good candidates for the democratic side the ticket. One of them, John Heenan, has very similar progressive issue positions to me on healthcare reform, human rights, raising the minimum wage and fighting corporate money in politics. The other candidates are decent people, too. There are no Democrats in this race that I wouldn’t want to win next November. I will announce my intentions and the legislative seat on January 11. It’s been an honor to serve you in the past. I look forward to the times ahead without regret for going through this process. It’s been a privilege to run for Congress. Happy New Year!!
