  • Hi Don, Appears as if the link to Montana Wilderness Association blog post isn’t working.

    That’s ironic, because MWA isn’t always working for Wilderness either.

    In fact, the Montana Wilderness Association is currently represented in federal district court by the same exact timber industry lawyers that once sued the government to undo the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

    The lawsuit involves a timber sale on the Kootenai National Forest, which the Montana Wilderness Association supports so much, with all their heart and soul, that they went to court with their timber industry ‘collaborators’ to make sure it happens.

    That one timber sale would result in over 8,800 acres of logging on the Kootenai National Forest, much of the logging taking place in important habitat for critters like lynx and grizzly bears. Over 3,400 acres of the logging would be via clearcuts, shelterwood cuts and ‘regeneration’ harvest.

    The timber sale the Montana Wilderness Association is supporting, with the help of timber industry lawyers, also would result in the construction of 9.25 miles of additional, permanent logging roads on the Kootenai National Forest. National Forests in Montana already already have a road maintenance backlog over over $600 million.

    The timber sale MWA supports would also reward people who built illegal roads on the Kootenia National Forest by taking 13 miles of these illegal, user created roads and adding them to the official road system.

    But, hey, the Montana Wilderness Association ‘collaborated’ with the timber industry on this logging project, so everyone is totally cool, right?

    Of course, if you try and find information or meeting notes or any substantive information at all about the “Kootenai Forest Stakeholders Coalition” you likely will come up empty handed. But, hey, #KeepItPublic right?
