Republican Anti-Semite Files As A Democrat in Missoula’s HD 99

In the past few election cycles, there have been a few strange crossover candidates who, despite being Republicans, file as Democrats in legislative races. Back in 2014, this activity was centered in Gallatin County, where a series of bogus Democrats filed in legislative races.

It seems that strategy has moved to Missoula County, where e-book author Greg Strandberg has filed as a Democrat in HD 99. He announced his candidacy in a rambling post that discussed snowpack and his desire to trim the roster of state workers.

While Strandberg ran (and lost) in 2014 as a Democrat, his politics seem to have shifted dramatically since then, spending the past few months praising the candidacy of Greg Gianforte; attacking Denise Juneau, in part because Ryan Zinke has a firm handshake; criticizing Senator Jon Tester and suggesting he not run in 2018; smearing staffers who work for Governor Bullock with innuendo; and attacking the integrity of people like Supreme Court Justice Jim Shea.

In fact, in a post from January 4 of this year in which he said that he will be supporting ultraconservative Greg Gianforte, Mr. Strandberg not only said that he “hates” Montana Democrats, but that he’s giving up on them:

I hate Montana Democrats.
I really do – I hate ‘em.
I liken them to that girl you liked in high school, the one that wouldn’t give you the time of day. Finally, after a lot of heartache and soul-searching, you decide to give up on her.
I’m giving up on the Montana Democrats.

That’s not all. Mr. Strandberg has also expressed some troubling bigotry. It’s hard to overlook this post arguing that the United States is under the control of the Jewish Rothschild family, an attack the Anti-Defamation League calls a “classic Anti-Semitic myth.”

He’s also opposed to the Democrats bringing in Senator Tammy Baldwin to speak at the Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner, arguing that Democrats should not invite an openly gay speaker to the annual event. In the words of this “Democratic” candidate:

C’mon – let’s not act all surprised. We know that Democrats rely on poor, disadvantaged, and minority groups to get into office.

The record is pretty clear: Mr. Strandberg is another faux Democratic candidate running for the Legislature, or he’s the only Gianforte-supporting, anti-Semitic, anti-equality, anti-Juneau, anti-Tester Democrat in the state.

Mr.Strandberg has no problem identifying the people he’s against, a list that will almost certainly soon include the Democratic voters of HD 99.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.

  • I think America would be a lot better, safer place if we had universal healthcare. Then everyone who needs it can get their mental health concerns dealt with…like many candidates rinning ghis year. I wish all the best to good folks running in tough races. Sad to see so many sad, nasty, Trump’s in training poking their heads up these days.

  • If he has a D behind his name his is a Democrat. The same can be said for people with an R behind their name as well.

    • I don’t think that’s true. What about the examples of TEA Party candidates deliberately entering Dem primaries to game the system? That appears to be what’s happening here.

      • It’s always been Republicans hiding in sheep’s clothing as a candidate, not the other way around. I also believe it is one of the reasons they want closed primaries for republicans. so If democrats decided to be that shifty here in Montana, the GOP is inoculated against the same kind of crossover practice, they always do to liberals during election cycles!

  • It’s probably true that you would have a better chance at getting elected by being a Democrat in Missoula. Republicans don’t seem to get any traction in places like Missoula.

  • Jeez, I wonder if he didn’t just file to try and brand the Democrats as losers… kinda like him. For an author, the guy is alway crying about money he should have as a celebrated author? Yet obviously his book sales must be in the gutter. How he should be getting Handouts from the Liberals since he is such a great guy? but no one in the party pays him any real notice.

He acts a lot like Trump, Narcissist, Cry baby, cant take a verbal punch. I am pretty sure he will get no traction like he did before…. Most Liberal people I have talked to from his area either know him enough to stay away, or don’t know him at all. it will likely stay that way!

  • That’s the most immature thing I have heard. I worked very hard to ensure that there were no anti Bernie protesters in Billings and this is their answer, wow nothing like closed minded people
