Don can’t research all the columns and letters out there so I’d like to add something to his recent post.

There’s a great program in the Northwest called WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). It allows students in states without medical schools to take core science classes and get clinical experience at their local colleges and universities before finishing up at the University of Washington School of Medicine. MSU is where students get their start in Montana.

This is a high-quality, cost-efficient way to get Montana kids involved in the medical profession. Many of the students who end up as MDs will return to their home states, in particular rural communities, and ply their trade.

There are 30 students in the Montana program from places like Hysham, Charlo, Ekalaka and Trout Creek. All 30 signed a letter to the editor in the Missoulian asking that the 2015 Montana Legislature expand Medicaid.

Here’s an excerpt:

Through our medical training, we are committing ourselves to our future patients. As legislators, you have made a commitment to these same communities. Please allow us to do as our profession calls us to do – to serve the health and dignity of all Montanans.

Please pass full Medicaid expansion.

Montana’s legislators had better listen to this plea from our future doctors.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
