Textbook Example of Compensation


There is probably a more serious post about the insanity of American gun culture to be written today, but it’s a holiday. Instead, I offer this assessment.  Psychology Central defines compensation as:

Compensation is a process of psychologically counterbalancing perceived weaknesses by emphasizing strength in other arenas.

When a retailer like Target respectfully asks customers not to bring guns into their stores, it takes a certain kind of person, with some deep-seated need for compensation, to respond like these clowns did:


I’ll leave it to you to determine what they might be compensating for, but their particular focus on their right to carry “long” guns into public spaces might provide a clue.
