Montana Politics

Governor Schweitzer on Same Sex Marriage

From the Daily Beast yesterday:

Advocates and politicos in the Big Sky state said Schweitzer had carefully guarded his views, and even close watchers of statehouse politics in Helena said they weren’t sure where he stood. I eventually tracked Schweitzer down at his lakefront home, and after describing the majestic Montana mountains outside his window, he said: “I believe that two people who love each other ought to be legally married … given the opportunity to support people of the same gender getting married, I do.”

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.

    • Oh, right. Back when he had sane majorities in the Montana Legislature, he really could have gotten something done.

I forget sometimes that you have absolutely no idea about politics in Montana, Mark, until you come along to remind us.

  • Like Barack Obama has, on this issue?

Considering Schweitzer couldn’t even get his own legislature to make homosexual acts legal, I really doubt there was much he could have politically done on marriage rights.

    • I admire the way you admire passivity, much as I admire the way Al Gore backed down in 2000. Of such men are tracts of poetry written. They stand alone among us, tributes to the human spirit. God bless Democrats.

      • You are funny sometimes, Mark, I’ll give you that. But the fact remains that he could have done nothing, and you know it, and you still criticize him for doing nothing.

But I want you to imagine two scenarios: one, Schweitzer comes out in favor of fully equal gay marriage. He probably still wins his election (assuming he doesn’t take any other liberal positions), but his popularity as governor in Montana takes a hit and clearly nothing, absolutely not a damn thing, changes legislatively in Montana.

Now look at what he in fact just did: he builds up his popularity to really incredible levels by being a centrist governor and avoiding fights he can’t win. Now, with the authority that comes from not being a politician any more, he comes out and says he supports gay marriage. That might actually cause a couple people to think twice about their own positions about gay marriage.

  • It would have been nice if Schweitzer would have stepped up to common sense and compassion while in office regarding the homosexual marriage issue, but as you pointed out, he was probably playing politics ( see Mind Control in: The Tokarskian Dictionary: a.k.a Meta-Level Bullshit)

But why even try with Tokarski? Time and time again he has shown that he isn’t genuinely interested in the intellectual endeavor of understanding. Rather, he is a pre-suppositionalist with bankrupt epistemic methods . Over at his blog, the guy dismisses the testimony of hundreds of eyewitnesses and experts as thought-control from the corporate-political overlords , but with a screenshot of an email, he’s got em’ dead to rights.

In the same way that religious apologists can explain away any inherent contradictions to their pre-ordained conclusions by appealing to an omniscience-escape-clause, Tokarski can always come up with post-hoc rationalizations by appealing to threats against careers and lives. Entirely ignoring the fact that people have sacrificed their careers as well as lives in the name of truth for issues less world-changing and involving fewer players.

Damned be the background evidence! This guy knows more about teaching than teachers!
