More Illegal Robocalls, It’s Time to Prosecute

I recently received an email from a concerned tipster about an illegal robocall being conducted by former State Senator Joe Balyeat and “the new Montana State Director of Americans for Prosperity.”  You can listen to the robocall here (h/t and thanks to MT Cowgirl — you can read a lot more about who Balyeat is and why you shouldn’t listen to him in the first place over at MT Cowgirl).

From our concerned tipster:

I am writing to inform you that I received a robo call on my government phone (number listed below) at 6:02 pm, Tuesday June 12, 2012. The number the call was placed from was 866-730-0150, from a group called Americans for Prosperity. The message was a recording of former state senator Joe Balyeat urging me to vote against John Tester and to attend an anti-Tester rally in Great Falls this weekend.

This robocall is highly disturbing for a number of reasons.  For starters, robocalls are simply illegal.  Furthermore, this robocall was made to a government number (even more illegal) and the robocall does not state who paid for the call.

Robocalls are very difficult to prosecute and prosecution largely depends on local officials getting involved: “complaints are handled by local law enforcement, and that’s where to take a complaint.”

I encourage all readers to contact the Gallatin County Attorney’s office and ask them to prosecute.  A bad precedent has been set this election cycle and we need to put a stop to it.

While you’re at it, since Mr. Balyeat thinks it’s so important for you to contact Sen. Tester to complain, why not give him a call or shoot him an email letting him know how much you appreciate his illegal robocalls?  You can find his phone number and email address here.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
