A Brand New Country

It’s a known fact that in the media, there is only so much room for news from Africa. So the crisis in Egypt has pushed aside what I consider to be much bigger news- Southern Sudan has officially voted to secede from Sudan as a whole, effective in July.

But things are not entirely rosy – both Northern and Southern Sudan have seen unrest recently, the former among students inspired by Egypt and the latter seeming to be within the Northern Sudan army stationed near the border.

Khartoum has said it will respect the decision of Southern Sudan, but that won’t really be proven to the test until July. It is imperative that the United States pay attention to Sudan, because it presents the best possibility for permanently putting to rest one of the most protracted and violent conflicts in Africa, and it could set a precedent for enforceable conflict resolution in the region, which has been lacking.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
