There has been a shooting in Helena tonight: one person killed, two wounded, and a gunman on the loose. Right now, I can hear a helicopter flying over the area looking for the suspect, who is presumed to be armed.
It’s certainly interesting how fast news travels in our media-rich environment. One of my students actually heard the shots being fired, leading to a discussion on Facebook. Others were already debating gun control. It’s an interesting environment—speculation, firsthand accounts, and commentary, all being generated by an entire community as the event transpires.
It’s got to be an interesting balancing act for the media. They’re racing against a flood of news reports from individuals, and must have to make tough choices between speed and accuracy.
Stay safe, everyone.
Update: I certainly hope the rumors I’m hearing about the people involved aren’t true. Really young kids, some being airlifted to Billings.
Terrifying, sad stuff. I wonder what Sebastian was thinking…
