If Only I Was Employed Here: When Gun Nuts Run Schools

The Harrold Independent School District in Texas has an innovative solution to school violence: more weapons on campus.  The district Superintendent laid out a compelling case:

"When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that’s when all of these shootings started. Why would you put it out there that a group of people can’t defend themselves? That’s like saying ‘sic ’em’ to a dog," Thweatt said in Friday’s online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Thweatt said officials researched the policy and considered other options for about a year before approving the policy change. He said the district also has various other security measures in place to prevent a school shooting.

I would love to know what that “year of research” entailed. My guess is that it involved 11 months of trying to connect his computer to the Internet, followed by three weeks of signing up for AOL, concluding with a week of reading the NRA’s web page.

Is Superintendent Thweatt concerned about students being hit in the cross fire? No, because the armed teachers “have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.”

That is a relief.

Countdown until Tim Fox proposes this for Montana schools…10…9…8

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.

  • He certainly does. You have to wonder, if he really believes the logic behind that policy, if he doesn’t believe guns have a place in high schools as well.

  • I’ve got no problem with it at all. ‘Course, I’m old. I remember when every kid had a rifle in the back of his truck in the parking lot of class C schools. And you know what? We had NO school shootings! Teachers should be allowed the option to carry a gun. I remember EXTREMELY well the case where the nutjob in Colorado went into the church bent on evil mayhem. He killed two people before being taken out. Now that’s not bad odds. An armed teacher is an effective teacher!
