An anti-gay hate group and RedState.com (yeah, two different groups) are currently showing six clips of the ABC film “The Path to 9/11” in an attempt to make people believe that political pressure, rather than concern for the truth, is leading efforts to edit the film. The clips, the least flattering and presumably the least true of the film, demonstrate quite clearly that the film should be pulled.
This post over at Red State.com makes pretty clear that ABC’s propaganda should be pulled rather than shown tomorrow night. It’s pretty unbelievable. From the post, we learn that Andrea Lafferty, from a group called the Traditional Values Coalition was invited to a screening of a film, and was able to put together some clips of the film. Now, what would qualify Ms. Lafferty to see the film, when, despite requests, former President Clinton and his advisors depicted in the film were not?
Well, Ms. Lafferty is the daughter of the TVC’s founder, and one of the group’s primary spokespersons. According to the People for the American Way, Ms. Lafferty and her father have a way with words:
In reference to fetal tissue research, Lafferty says “I think we’re going to have to apologize to the Nazis for this.”
“Americans should understand that their attitudes about homosexuality have been deliberately and deceitfully changed by a masterful propaganda/marketing campaign that rivals that of Adolph Hitler. In fact, many of the strategies used by homosexuals to bring about cultural change in America are taken from Hitler’s writings and propaganda welfare manuals.”
The Traditional Values Coalition, in short, is a right-wing, overtly political religious group that spends its time bleating about the homosexual agenda–basically they’re the Westboro Baptist Church with better P.R., and yet somehow, not only was this group invited to a screening of the film, they were somehow able to secure lengthy clips from the video to display on their web site in advance of the film’s premiere.
ThinkProgress and Daily Kos have been all over this story–and it deserves attention. When a public broadcaster allows itself to become the mouthpiece for hateful, Republican lies sixty days before an election, on the fifth anniversary of September 11th, the public trust has been breached. When people like the Lafferty family have their hands on this film, it strains credibility to believe that this work is apolitical.
It’s bad enough that the administration has so politicized this war that any questoning of tactics will get one branded a traitor and coward…how far have we come when even the people who are supposed to be a check on the government have become megaphones for their lies?
