One thing that can be said about working for Senator Burns: it certainly opens up career opportunities in the field of “government affairs”.
The Counsel for Marketing and Opinion Research just announced the hiring of Christopher Lee as their new “Director of Government Affairs and Counsel”. Now what does CMOR (get it?) do? According to their web site:
The Council for Marketing and Opinion Research (CMOR) was formed in 1992 by the four major associations in the marketing and opinion research field: American Marketing Association (AMA), Advertising Research Foundation (ARF), Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO), and Marketing Research Association (MRA)…Together, under the CMOR umbrella, these organizations are working to further the acceptance of survey research by the public and the government through education, lobbying, and providing legislative support to prevent abuses of the research process.
Now, I’m no expert at parsing industry-speak, but my sense is that CMOR is about finding ways to allow ‘marketing research’ in an environment that is trying to restrict spam and direct marketing.
How does Conrad fit in? Well, Mr. Lee, as you might imagine, is a former Burns staffer, and one of the achievements that led to his hiring is his:
He also has familiarity with issues critical to our profession, including the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and CAN SPAM Act. His Capitol Hill experience includes serving as Deputy Counsel to Senator Conrad Burns at the time of the CAN-SPAM Act (the federal legislation to restrict commercial emails).
Strange how many people go from working for Burns into industry lobbying positions, isn’t it?
