I am blown away by this:
It’s not enough for the Bush administration to accuse of being wasteful and ineffective. They have decided to specifically point out what is wasteful and ineffective.
The US government has launched a website, “Expect More,” where they point out which government programs aren’t making the cut. Specifically:
“ExpectMore.gov is a new website that provides the public with information on how Federal programs perform. ExpectMore.gov was launched in February 2006 and includes information about every Federal program assessed to date – what its purpose is, how it performs, and what it is doing to perform better. There are nearly 800 assessment summaries and detailed assessments available on ExpectMore.gov. By making candid assessments of programs more accessible to the public, ExpectMore.gov raises awareness of what Federal programs are doing to improve.”
You will find plenty of interesting programs on their “Not Performing Programs” list, which includes such wasteful programs as Federal Work Study, the Perkins Loans for college education, National School Lunch, Head Start, and the Public Defender Service of District Columbia.
I see the strategy here. This is the same type of program seeks to push Bush’s ideology through initiaties that seem to make common sense like No Child Left Behind. Lots of data, little analysis…
