Burns to Return Abramhoff Money…

Color me confused.

Yesterday, Senator Burns said that he couldn’t return the dirty Abramoff money because it had already been spent:

Aides to Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., said Tuesday the senator will not return donations from indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his associates, because the money has been spent.

Today, we learn that he intends to return it–and in order to preserve the appearance of legitimate government, other members of Congress should as well:

U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., will return the estimated $150,000 in campaign donations he has received from indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his co-workers and tribal clients.
Burns said Abramoff’s donations, while “legal and fully disclosed, have served to undermine the public’s confidence in its government.”
“I call on my colleagues, both Democrats and Republicans alike, including the state and national committees, to do the same,” Burns said in a prepared statement released Thursday evening.

So, that thing about the money already being spent? Aside from being utterly ridiculous, it was a lie? And I wonder what this says about the Senator’s judgement? Can Montanans really trust someone who is either absurdly naive or obviously corrupt?

We can do better.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we would certainly appreciate it.
