Big Sky 55+ members, health care workers, and retired union members show how proposed cuts to health care will pay for new tax breaks for the wealthy corporations.

As the nation marks the 83rd anniversary of the passage of Social Security on August 14, 1935, Big Sky 55+ members will hold a Birthday Event to celebrate the many years that Social Security has helped millions of people stay out of poverty in their older years. But, we want to recognize that vital health care services for millions of Americans, including over 220,000 elderly, disabled and low-income Montanans, are at risk because of federal budget proposals that would cut Medicaid and Medicare to pay for the new tax law that added nearly $4 trillion to the national debt.

Advocates will detail the history how cuts to healthcare in the tax law are already raising premiums and out-of-pocket costs under the Affordable Care Act and causing millions to lose their health care while insurance and prescription drug companies have benefited under the same law.

In addition, advocates will outline the new threats to Medicaid, Medicare and the ACA, which strengthened both programs including a new proposal for more tax cuts unveiled that could prompt more proposals to cut Medicaid and Medicare and nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to fill the current Supreme Court vacancy. Kavanaugh’s confirmation would pose new threats to the ACA including key protections for half of Montanans with pre-existing conditions and Medicaid expansion covering over 96,000 Montanans and 12 million people nationally.
