“The Enemy of the American People” — What Responsibility for the Capital Gazette Newspaper Shooting do Donald Trump and Greg Gianforte Bear?

Shares

February 17th, 2017: Donald Trump stated:

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!

A friend of mine who is a journalist for a newspaper in another state wrote:

A Maryland newspaper reports on a shooting in its own newsroom. At least 4 are dead. I’m sitting in a newsroom right now feeling shocked and somewhat terrified. Will this happen to me and my colleagues one day? We don’t know what the shooter’s motives were, but I wonder. When a powerful person sits at the White House and repeatedly calls the media “the enemy of the American people” what effect does that have?

This looks like it could be motive from the person now identified as the alleged shooter:

May 24th, 2017: Greg Gianforte used a different microphone than twitter to get his message to reporters and the American people:

July 4th, 2017: Free-press groups warn of violence against media:

Trump’s rhetoric and Gianforte’s assault, as well as other anti-media incidents like the arrest of a West Virginia reporter while trying to ask a Cabinet secretary a question, lead to an atmosphere in which more extreme measures against the press can take place, Mahoney said.

“All these things together point to a trend where the press is being undermined,” Mahoney said. “You can’t connect dots from an action to a word, but you’re contributing to a backdrop where this is permitted, where it’s at least seen as though this is the new narrative, that it’s open season on the press because ‘it’s all fake news.’”

October 19th, 2017: A donor and stalwart supporter of Greg Gianforte took to Voices of Montana to state that she would not have assaulted Ben Jacobs, but rather, she “would have shot” him, direct quote.

June 26th, 2018: The Observer, an online publication owned by Jared Kushner, husband of Ivanka Trump, son-in-law of President Donald Trump and his strategic advisor printed a dangerous story, about former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos:

From the Southern Poverty Law Center: Milo wants vigilantes to start killing journalists, and he’s not being ‘ironic’

June 25th, 2018:

Trump stated:

At his rally last night, President Trump referred to the press as “the enemy of the people.” He has done that frequently. “Enemy of the people” has a long, horrific pedigree, of course. You will find it in the French Terror. You find it again in the Soviet Terror. Thousands of people were executed as “enemies of the people.”

June 28th, 2018: The Capital Gazette, a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, printed a story about a shooting in its own newsroom earlier today:
