Will Donald J. Trump be impeached in 2018?  Disgust with his petulant disregard for the constitution and U.S. history is increasing.  His constant bravado deflects attention from confirmed Russian interference in our 2016 elections and from the damage he is inflicting on essential government programs that protect worker safety, our environment, and even our justice system.

Trump and conservatives have ramped up attacks on the FBI, the Justice Department and Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump-Russia collusion.  These attacks caused me to reflect on my own memory of the 2016 election.  Republicans contend the FBI is biased against Donald Trump not Hillary Clinton so I reviewed the facts.

Former FBI Director James Comey announced just eleven days before the 2016 presidential election that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails.  At the time, his shocking decision which violated long-standing policy and tradition in the FBI, sent heads spinning and was attributed to pressure from FBI agents.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general is investigating whether the FBI acted improperly by:

•publicly announcing the Clinton email investigation in July 2016, and

•notifying Congress just days before the 2016 election that the investigation into Clinton’s emails was being reopened.

According to an article in Townhall (Dec.  2, 2016) a close friend of Comey’s, when asked why Comey reopened the investigation, reported that FBI agents and high-ranking FBI officials were intensely pressuring Comey to reopen the Clinton investigation.  When Clinton emails were found on her aide’s personal computer, Comey jumped at the excuse to reopen the investigation.

Protecting law enforcement against interference by the president and Republicans in Congress is critical now.  The FBI is not infallible.  Its agents should be representative of our population.  As of DOJ’s last report (2014 numbers) only 19.15% of FBI agents are female, 4.5% African American and 6.81% Hispanic.  These numbers indicate potential bias, but not for a female presidential candidate.

Congress and the president have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks, including passing legislation to:

  • Avoid a government shutdown before the January 19 deadline
  • Maintain National Security Administration surveillance of global terrorists; authorization expires on January 19
  • Provide additional disaster aid for Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico
  • Fund Children’s Health Insurance Program
  • Avoid deporting Dreamers (Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, DACA, their protections expire on March 5)
  • Avoid a March default on US debt
  • Avoid Federal Aviation Administration shutdown on March 31

With Republican tax cuts burgeoning our national debt, we must add to that list, Trump’s insistence on $18 billion for a border wall with Mexico and at least $200 million for a public-private infrastructure development plan which the president himself said over the week-end probably won’t work just before his economic policy advisor presented the plan to Republican Congressional leaders.

This dysfunctional administration is crippling our country domestically and internationally.  We must make sure our legal system is allowed to do its work without political interference.  I believe this administration will end when the truth is fully revealed.

If you appreciate an independent voice holding Montana politicians accountable and informing voters, and you can throw a few dollars a month our way, we\'d certainly appreciate it.
