Make America Nazi-Free Again

Steve Bannon. Richard Spencer. Alex Jones. Sebastian Gorka. Donald Trump.

This year seems to be the year that the bacteria crawled out of its hole and tried to set up shop in mainstream America.

We’ve seen Nazi flags in Charlottesville, we’ve seen white supremacist rallies on college campuses in attempts to incite violence and we’ve seen the Trump administration and Breitbart rise as a precursor to what? Hopefully not the 4th Reich?

In all of this, we’ve heard a lot of people standing up to these troubling trends, but not many from the government or the private sector who have been willing to stand up and say enough is enough.

So this is very refreshing. Prepare to be blown away.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus | Available 10.27.17

For those of you unfamiliar with the franchise, Wolfenstein is a first-person perspective, alternate reality game for all platforms. This newest version of the game is highly anticipated for many reasons, its rabid fan-base, its top-quality graphics and an unlikely reason; its political relevance.

The game is from Bethesda Softworks, a company that many in the gaming industry know for its cutting-edge games, advanced graphics, and epic gaming franchises like Fallout, Doom, The Elder Scrolls, and The Evil Within.

It’s good to see pushback from the tech community as white supremacy seems to subtly pervade the very white, very male tech industry of Google memos written by offhand misogynists, not to mention the refusal of Facebook and Twitter to police hate speech and language that incites violence.

As for the game, it is a (hopefully) impossible future where the Nazis won World War II, sort of like ‘The Man in the High Tower.’ Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a sequel to the 2014 game Wolfenstein: The New Order, which is similar to the Philip K. Dick story in which the Nazis won the war and you’re trying to stop them from enacting their violent and racist policies across America.

The game is highly anticipated and nearly unanimously praised for its depth and reach, its story and its gameplay. You also get to try and make America Nazi-free again. Imagine a world where it’s necessary to defend yourself, your family and your America from the incursion of Nazi genocide. Let’s just say that a friendly debate just won’t do. You’ll have to fight back.

One group has been skeptical of it though. White supremacists masquerading as defenders of the Trump administration. This seems to prove the point that we’ve all been trying to make for folks who may not see the troubling correlations between the Trump administration and the rise of authoritarianism is Europe in the 1930’s.

Internet Trolls are not happy with Nazi-bashing though as seen in AV Club and Newsweek articles.

I hope that Wolfenstein II continues to inspire debate as a dystopian alternate reality and is not a look into a possible future.
