Diane Smith misses an opportunity

Shares

Rob Stutz, candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, posted a short clip from a recent MCV candidates forum.  At the beginning of the clip, the moderator asks “what is your position on the funding of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and how will you work on this?”

Of the five candidates in attendance (Dave Strohmaier, Kim Gillan, Franke Wilmer, Rob Stutz, and Diane Smith) all but one candidate said they supported the Land and Water Conservation Fund and would work to increase funding, etc.

The one candidate who did not take a position was Smith who said, “I don’t know enough about it to tell you.”

The clip is worth watching – you can view it here.

While this is an incredibly short clip and I have not seen video from the rest of the forum (hopefully MCV will post the entire forum soon), Smith’s answer doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence in her knowledge of the issues.  I don’t think it’s fair to judge her on this answer alone, but I do think she should have had some knowledge of the issue.  Another missed opportunity to inspire (or, at least, persuade) some Democrats to join her camp.

In case you’re in the same boat that Diane Smith was in,

The LWCF Program provides matching grants to States and local governments for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities (as well as funding for shared federal land acquisition and conservation strategies). The program is intended to create and maintain a nationwide legacy of high quality recreation areas and facilities and to stimulate non-federal investments in the protection and maintenance of recreation resources across the United States. That definition is only applicable to the "state side" of the LWCF. There is also a "federal side," which is for acquisition by federal agencies (National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife, and Forest Service). Other grant programs, such as Forest Legacy and Cooperative Endangered Species Programs, are funded from LWCF as well.

And Ms. Smith skipped the 'Pasty Party' — a major Democratic get together in Missoula. The four other active candidates were there. Another missed opportunity.

I'd much rather hear a candidate respond honestly then get fed a bunch of rhetoric.
