The Big Day!

South Sudan has gained independence! One more country to keep track of in Africa, I know. And their prospects aren’t great- taking the poorer half of a seriously screwed up country and making it independent doesn’t sound like a promising start. But if the peace holds, it will have at least provided permanent respite to the South Sudanese, who fought for this day for decades. And there is at least one good sign – President Kiir of South Sudan (whose taste in headgear is rivaled, among African leaders, only by Goodluck Jonathon) has said that he will not go back to war over disputed territory, despite Khartoum’s provocations.

Odds may be against it, but I am firmly hoping we’re seeing another Czechoslovakia, not Yugoslavia. And I hope our government (through action or inaction) helps make that possible.
