It Matters

I suppose you’ve all heard by now: Hundreds of thousands of homosexual couples will soon have the opportunity to get married in the state of New York. This is all the more significant because it comes as a result of democratic action, no as a decision of the courts. It’s a significant mile marker on the way to the admirable goal of a more equal and compassionate society for people of any sexual orientation.

In 2009, a similar effort was defeated. A few years later, governor Cuomo managed to push it through the same Republicans that blocked it previously. If there’s one group of people in this country who had good reason to give up on politics, it is the LGBTQ community. Fortunately, they did not give up, and their efforts continue to bear fruit. It’s a good lesson for all of us who may be tempted to give in the the belief that it’s impossible to better our country through politics.

  • What a great day!  Oh, I’m not refering to the gays’ victory, although that’s great too.  I’m refering to the fact that there will be LOTS of fundiwackmentalist heads exploding all around the country!  And to me, that’s one of the sweetest sounds there is!  And to think, just in time for the FOURTH!  What BETTER way to celebrate freedom?  I can think of none than giving some deserving folks their rights at last! To quote Braveheart.  FREEEEEDOM!  The freedom to marry somone you love.  It’s simple, isn’t it?

  • Another state with people confused about who will be the man or woman in a relationship.  The psychologists and psychiatrists must love these liberal states.

    • God made Adam, and God made Eve.  Is it REALLY that hard to tell the difference?  It’s marriage, dude, NOT anatomy class!  Two “people” committed in a loving relationship.  What business is it of YOURS is it to say that they can’t marry?  It’s none.  BTW, for the record, I’ve met MANY a big fat holy roller momma who wore the pants in a one of your “christian” fundiwackmentalist marriages.  And you wanna know sumthin’, buddy?  I really wasn’t SURE who the man or woman was in that kinda marriage!   I’m thinkin’ it would have come down to genetic testing like they used to do on them Russian women shot putters!   Only GOD knows for sure!

      • Or a proctologist and a mixologist!  Once poor Dopey went to a proctologist to get sh*tfaced and to a mixologist to get his head outta his ass!  He’s assbackwards!  Poor guy was BORN stupid!

  • The confusion is only necessary if you insist that every relationship must have a man and a woman.  And is a bit of gender confusion really worse than the confusion created when a person has the legitimacy of their most basic instincts questioned by the society in which they live?

  • yes, it certainly does matter.  but how much should Democrat loyalists acknowledge a few courageous Republicans helped this to happen?

    • I think they should definitely be acknowledged – it wasn’t a victory for partisan politics, it was a victory for a political movement.  Democrats did push this through, and Cuomo deserves a great deal of credit for that, but what really made the difference was that the movement pushed enough hold-out Republicans to adopt it.

Nonetheless – there’s no way to hide that the deep party divide here.  What percentage of Republicans voted for this, compared to the percentage of Democrats?  The party divide is very clear here.  If the vast majority Republicans hadn’t been opposed to gay marriage, it would have passed two years ago.  If New York had a Republican governor, it still wouldn’t have passed.  So, it matters.

  • Interesting approach towards this. I’m curious to think what type of impact this would have globally? Sometimes people get a little upset with global expansion. I’ll check back to see what you have to say.

  • Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your content seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Cheers
