It’s time for the Montana media to tell the truth about the Republican circus at the Legislature. In the flood of insanity coming out of the Legislature this session, there’s been precious little context from the media about just how far to the right the Republican majority has gone. Instead of tepid commentary about how Democrats and Republicans view the budget differently, it’s time for the media to honestly report about the paranoid, retrograde views being expressed in committees and on the floor, by citizens and legislators.
These extremist views do not represent Montana. Hell, they don’t even represent Montana in 1893. Even though the Four Georgians settled here in Helena, most Montanans think the right side won the Civil War, even if their legislators don’t.
Legitimate law makers, when unable to find a single proponent for their bill, wouldn’t attack the use of computers and science because God told them to. Real lawmakers wouldn’t seriously be talking about nullifying federal laws.
Real reporting would show just how extreme and dangerous the thinking of these legislators really is. When Montanans vote in the next legislative election, they deserve to know that their choice isn’t between the friendly Democrat and friendly Republican down the street. They should know what the real consequences of voting for the Republican are likely to be.
Come on, media. Tell the whole story.
