Say that you are Roy Brown. Your own internal polling suggests that you are in deep trouble in the race for governor, and that efforts to attack Governor Schweitzer will only backfire. You really want to be governor, though, because someone has to finally stand up for the oil companies against the little guy.
What do you do? Do you offer a bold vision for the state, consistent with your principles? Do you reach beyond the tired Republican election playbook of fear and fudging the facts and actually propose something substantive? Do you offer Montanans a real debate on important issues?
No. You offer three largely meaningless reforms of state government as an important initiative. While you’re at it, you even make them things that governor largely agrees with. And pick another one that you failed to carry through the legislative session. That’ll show the voters what kind of leader you are!
That’s going to win votes, mister.
