Really, John? You Won’t Commit To Supporting Hillary?

I have to say that I’m disappointed in John Edwards refusal to say that he will support Hillary Clinton if she wins the Democratic nomination. I’m hardly one to argue that loyalty to party is the most important thing, but I can’t imagine that anyone who believes in Edwards’ progressive values would rather have any of the Republicans running win, rather than Hillary.

I’m just not ready to concede that Edwards is the anti-establishment candidate, battling the corporatist Democrats and Republicans. While I’ve been impressed with a number of his proposals in this campaign, nothing in his career suggests that he some kind of radical who will restore Democrats to their roots.

After 8 years of this disastrous regime, what matters is putting someone in office who will begin to undo some of the damage, rather than extending it. Does Edwards really believe that Romney, Giuliani, McCain, or Thompson are the people to do that? I doubt it.

But there is much to say that Hillary is just the opposite.

“I’m not willing to talk about that at this point,” he said. From the article, it looks like he said that he would support Hillary if she were the nominee,
just that he is not willing to name anyone else in specific.

On Tuesday, Edwards went a bit further, though he still stopped short of vowing to support Clinton if she wins the nomination. “I fully expect to support the Democratic nominee and I fully expect to be the nominee,” he told ABC in Dartmouth, N.H.

What the hell? Talk about non-stories…
