Coretta Scott King

We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. But Coretta knew and we know that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor. –Reverend Joseph Lowery.

“It was difficult for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps.”–Jimmy Carter

And the disgusting Wellstoning has officially begun. Drudge has his right wing spin, Kate O’Beirne actually just made the connection to Wellstone specifically. I haven’t been there, but I can only imagine what the lunatics at Little Green Footballs and Michelle Malkin’s husband are already saying.
The obscenity of the Right co-opting the memorial for Paul Wellstone is still an ugly wound for a lot of liberals. And here they are at it again, defining what is appropriate for people to say at memorials. The crowd there today certainly did not see the remarks as inappropriate; they seemed, rightly, to see the words for what they were–honoring the legacy and life of a woman who refused to stand in silence while a government fought unjust wars.

If it is so inappropriate to politicize memorials, why do Republicans keep doing it?

Update: Nah, Republicans would never do anything as classless as politicize something like this.  Ghouls.

  • Pssst…the politiczation happened at the lectern, not on the blogs.

Republicans co-opting Wellstone! Now that’s funny. What year is it in your world? The obscenity of turning a funeral into a political rally is still an ugly badge for lots of liberals, mostly because it shows them to be obscene. And you want to balme Republicans for them doing it again? Or does it make them the nasties for pointing it out? Kill the messenger?

  • Yeah, I have heard a lot from the people there suggesting how offended they were…at both the Wellstone and King funerals. Oh wait, I haven’t. Instead, I have heard right wing distortions and misrpresentations about both.

Tell you what. Find a quotation from one of Wellstone’s family members that supports your point of view. Or someone close to the King family. Then tell me why Rush Limbaugh, Kate O’Beirne, Matt Drudge, Ann Coulter and you are better placed to gauge the appropriateness of either memorial.
