The Media

The Helena IR writes about effective writing; tomorrow I will write about weight loss.

In my ten years of reading the Independent Record, I have never laughed so hard as I did after reading the editorial on 11/23/05, suggesting that teachers “often…are not particularly concerned” with the writing of students and that teachers give students pats on the head for regurgitating facts incoherently.

I guess if I were the editors of a newspaper that looks more and more like a collection of livejournal posts, I’d do some serious personal reflection about sloppy writing and thinking before pointing any fingers

If you were to take out the “facts” part, I would assume that the editorial was referring to the average story published in the IR. I guess if I were the editors of a newspaper that looks more and more like a collection of livejournal posts, I’d do some serious personal reflection about sloppy writing and thinking before pointing any fingers.

Absolutely, teachers can do a better job of teaching writing…and many may not devote the time necessary to help their students. In every field, there are people who don’t do a very good job…like editors who substitute cheap shots for analysis, and personal feeling for reporting.

  • Editors? I think that was more an incorrect assumption than a typo. Clearly, it is a team of editors that comes up with such hard hitting editorial comments as “Thumbs Down to Cancer.”
