Today’s IR is running a story about the current controversy surrounding the school funding issue. As I suspected, the committee charged with coming up with a school funding formula to satisfy the court order last year that found that Montana’s current funding system violates the Montana Constitution. I suspect that part of the problem is that this is tough and nobody wants to make the tough choices that are required to deal with our seemingly backwards funding crisis. I don’t have a solution, either, however, I suspect that the only real solution will require politically unpopular moves like school district consolidation and allowing alternative regimes for administration. I also suspect that the funding issue would also be partially solved by dealing with factors outside of education like the rising costs of energy and health care. Whatever the solution, I don’t think this panel or this style of discussion will do so. Someone (Mr. Governor?) needs to step in and make some decisions.
